Kyiv Security Forum: Shared Responsibility for Peace and Freedom in Europe

This year’s Kyiv Security Forum was dedicated to two symbolic dates: the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, marking the end of World War II, and the 40th anniversary of Europe Day as an official EU holiday. These milestones remind us of the price of freedom won 80 years ago and our shared responsibility to defend it in times of new challenges.

The Forum began with a tribute to Ukrainian heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine’s freedom and independence. On St. Michael’s Square, near the Memorial to Ukrainian Heroes, participants laid flowers and observed a moment of silence.

The Forum posed a critical question: “To be or not to be? Can humanity prevent a Third World War?” One of our key partners, American diplomat and former U.S. Special Representative Kurt Volker, emphasized: “Putin believes Russia has the right to conquer other territories. Peace is not something he considers. That’s why we need a strategy of deterrence.”

The discussions focused on finding ways to strengthen the international order. We spoke about the need to broaden Ukraine’s circle of partners, protect our national interests, and create a just world based on civilized principles.

We believe that the unity of European nations is the foundation of lasting security and stress that a just end to the war must be grounded in dignity and truth. The defense of democratic values is our collective duty, as these values are essential to countering the threats of radicalism. We are convinced that only together can we build a shared model of security that protects Europe from future upheavals.

“Rebuilding Ukraine is not only about reconstructing destroyed infrastructure — it also means affirming our state as an integral part of the European community that defends freedom and peace. We must create a Ukraine that becomes a model of resilience, unity, and commitment to democratic principles,” stated Mykyta Laktionov, Deputy Head of the Ukraine Rebuilding Alliance.

By defending the freedoms earned 80 years ago, we are also building a future where justice, democracy, and unity prevail over threats. We are grateful to all participants, partners, and friends who stand with us in defending these values.
