Key steps to restore and sustainable water supply in Ukraine

On October 15-17, 2024, Kyiv hosted the XXI International Forum “AQUA UKRAINE-2024”, the main event of the year in the water sector of Ukraine. The event brought together water professionals, representatives of government agencies and international partners to discuss key challenges in the water supply sector, especially in the regions affected by the war.

“Restoration of water infrastructure in the areas affected by hostilities is not only a matter of technical support. It is the foundation for the future resilience of our communities. Water is a resource without which full recovery and life support is impossible, so it is important to use modern technologies and approaches to water management,” said Yuriy Maslov, Chairman of the Alliance for Restoration of Ukraine.

In addition, the government has recently approved the State Target Program for Integrated Water Supply in the Regions Affected by Military Operations until 2030, developed by the State Agency of Ukraine for Water Resources. The program envisages construction, reconstruction and repair of hydraulic structures, clearing and regulation of river channels, and the use of groundwater to diversify water supply sources.

International organizations are actively involved in solving the problem: representatives of international donors emphasize the need to invest in the modernization of water infrastructure, improve water monitoring systems, and harmonize Ukrainian standards with EU norms.

We emphasize that the implementation of such solutions is an integral part of European integration and sustainable recovery of the country.
