Just peace and global security: a discussion between Nobel laureates in Washington

As part of Ukraine Week in Washington, DC, a unique discussion was held with two Nobel Peace Prize winners, David Beazley and Oleksandra Matviychuk. The meeting touched upon a number of important topics, from developing strategies to ensure a just peace in Ukraine to analysing the strategic interests of Western partners, including the United States.

The discussion centred on the issue of combining moral values with the realities of global politics. The speakers emphasised that Ukraine’s victory in the fight against aggression will not only restore justice, but will also be an important step towards strengthening international order and stability.

‘For Ukraine, a just peace is a peace built on the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the right of the people to self-determination. It is a process in which Ukraine’s statehood is restored and the affected regions are supported to rebuild infrastructure and social institutions,’ said David Beazley, former Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme.

Achieving a just peace in Ukraine has a far-reaching impact on global security. It sets an important precedent for international cooperation and support for collective responsibility. A weak international response to a violation of one country’s sovereignty only encourages new acts of aggression in other regions of the world. That is why many participants of the Ukrainian Week in Washington view support for Ukraine as a strategic necessity for the entire world.

The discussion between David and Alexandra clearly demonstrated that an open and balanced dialogue can become the foundation for new formats of cooperation based on mutual respect and the pursuit of the common good. Supporting Ukraine is not just about helping a single country, but an investment in a stable and predictable future for the whole world.
